The ASCA National Model calls for the development and implementation of programs that target student outcomes, including the personal/social arena. Social-emotional learning programming is an efficient approach that merits further attention by school counselors and other professionals. This poster session will present the findings of a study examining the effectiveness of the Kimochis program in promoting social-emotional learning and resilience in elementary school children. Implications for practice will be discussed.
Literature review on children's mental health, social-emotional learning, and resilience will be utilized as a foundation for introducing the impetus behind the study. Of relevance to this study were the ecological theory, the Kimochis program, and best practices in program implementation and evaluation. The current study provided valuable information regarding the impact of the Kimochis intervention on elementary students. Preliminary evidence supporting the effectiveness of the Kimochis program was provided with this study. Furthermore, this study added to the literature examining SEL programs and confirmed the positive impact that SEL programs can have on participants (Durlak et al., 2011; Sklad et al., 2012). In conclusion, the results of this present study are promising and support the utility of the Kimochis program in fostering social-emotional competence and academic success of elementary school children.
Professional counselors will gain a better understanding of the multi-faceted components of supporting social and emotional learning in school settings and its effectiveness in promoting social-emotional learning and resilience in elementary school children.
Professional counselors will gain an introduction to Kimochis, a high-interest, toy-based series of SEL instructional aides that provide support for instruction in primary social skills, friendship skills, empathy, respect, and tolerance, conflict resolution, independence and resilience, and positive, self-regulated behavior.
Professional counselors will gain insight into the use of Kimochis at multiple levels of interventions as well as for general instruction for SEL.
