18028 - Group Leading Nuts and Bolts: Skills That Will Make Your Groups Better

Leading groups well is difficult! This workshop focuses on the major concepts of group leading (e.g., the art of engagement, the art of control, clarity of purpose), essential leadership skills, common mistakes, how to process exercises effectively, and how to work with one member while keeping other members engaged. Much of the workshop will be demonstrations. A wide variety of exercises will be discussed and demonstrated. Videos showing the skills and techniques will be shown. Beginning and closing skills will be demonstrated.

The topic will be group counseling and group leadership skills.  The major concepts of the art of engagement and the art of control will be discussed and demonstrated.  Basic and advanced leadership skills will be shown in role play and videos of actual groups.  Engaging, creative exercises will be presented—participants will be asked to be involved and share but focus will be primarily on skills and concepts.  An active, multisensory approach to group leading will be shown.  Essential skills regarding drawing out, intervening, working with the whole group while working with one member will be discussed and demonstrated.  Many new, creative exercises will be shown along with how to process exercises to a deeper level.  The essential skills for the warm-up, working, and closing phases of a group will be addressed.  The use of major counseling theories in a group setting will be discussed and demonstrated.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to employ skills that better engage members in the group process.
  • Participants will learn strategies for maintaining control of the flow during a group session.
  • Participants will identify the major common mistakes that group leaders make resulting in less effective groups.
  • Participants will recognize creative techniques that enhance group engagement.
  • Participants will describe strategies that for focusing on a single group member while keeping all members engaged
  • Participants will examine creative exercises that allow for more in-depth processing in group counseling.
