This chapter gives a brief 'history lesson' that illuminates how and when the counseling profession first recognized the need for a formal code of ethics, how it came into existence, and how it has evolved over time. This history will help you gain an appreciation for the extensive process that goes into creating and updating the Code.

  1. Examine how the ACA Code of ethics has evolved
  2. Explore elements of ethical decision making models, including specialized models and similarities among models
  3. Understand enforcement of the Code and review an inventory of attitudes and beliefs about ethical issues
