Psychoeducational Groups for Alcohol Harm Reduction: A Demonstration

Description

This session highlights the utilization of two evidence-based practices—personalized feedback interventions and motivational interviewing—in a group format for problematic drinking among college students. Along with information and introductions to these two modalities/tools, the presenters will provide a demonstration of how they are to be used and provide discussion regarding specific concerns and cultural factors to note.

  • The participants will develop an understanding of designing a psycho-educational group to address binge drinking among college students. This objective will be achieved through helping participants identify the didactic content, necessary assessment tools, materials used, and the discussion topics in the psycho-educational group.
  • The participants will develop an understanding of PFIs and MI in addressing binge drinking problem among college students. This objective will be achieved through providing participants with a research-based rationale why PFIs and MI are effective for the intervention of binge drinking among college students.
  • The participants will learn counseling skills and tools in real-world scenarios to address binge drinking among college students. This objective will be achieved through providing participants with opportunities for critical observation of a demonstration of a psycho-educational group. Participants will also have a chance to debrief and discuss the demonstration in order to further their learning experience.
