Multilingual and multicultural individuals often feel the need to navigate multiple environments. To do so successfully, they use code-switching techniques, both linguistically and socially. In this roundtable, we will discuss the various forms of code switching, their uses and purpose, and ways in which they can be incorporated into counseling. Emphasis will be placed on multicultural awareness, improving the therapeutic relationship and client well-being through the use of code switching.
Participants will gain an understanding of the language use, barriers, and communication styles that impact the use of code-switching.
Participants will expand their understanding of multicultural competencies counselors should acquire when working with multilingual or minortized clients.
Finally, participants will gain knowledge on the role of code-switching and how to incorporate it in their practice.
