The Crisis, Trauma, and Disaster Counseling Task Force is charged with increasing resources for ACA members and the public to support individuals and communities following a crisis or potentially traumatizing event(s). This includes developing standards of practice to increase counselor competence in working with individuals/communities who have experienced trauma. This session will review newly released resources and three sets of competencies for crisis counseling, disaster mental health, and trauma counseling.

  • Understand new and existing resources for professional counselors and external stakeholders related to crisis counseling, disaster mental health and trauma counseling.
  • Explore key skills and practical resources counselors can use to increase their own level of competency in working with individuals and communities who have experienced crisis or trauma events.
  • Examine newly developed standards of practice for crisis counseling, disaster mental health, and trauma counseling.
