Professional counselors (LPMHCs) are being hired at Department of Veterans Affairs. This panel will highlight the current status of hiring LPMHCs within the VA; review professional qualification standards and accreditation needed to be hired, the structure of LPMHC training programs; unique considerations for working within VA, and suggestions for professional counselors who may want to join VA to serve the Veteran population.

  • Attendees will walk-away with an understanding of the current Qualifications standards for LPMHC’s within VA. This includes an overview and discussion about CACREP accreditation and the decision to utilize this accrediting body to qualify LPMHC’s for hiring at VA.
  • Attendees will increase their understanding of how to develop a positive relationship with potential VA employers, including advocacy for the profession with positing positions broader, to include LPMHC’s.
  • Attendees will gain an overview of hiring initiatives that focus on LPMHC’s. This includes VA being an employer of choice by LPMHC’s and hiring new professional counselors who have participated in VA-led training programs.
