Bringing Body Positivity, Size Diversity, and Health at Every Size Into Counseling

Mar 30, 2019 4:00pm ‐ Mar 30, 2019 5:00pm

Description

This roundtable discussion will focus on the way in which the counseling profession might be perpetuating the systematic oppression of people with larger bodies. We will explore how counselors may unintentionally harm clients by not being aware of our own participation in weight stigma. We will discuss how weight-neutral paradigms such as Health at Every Size, Body Positivity, and Size Diversity can assist clients and counselors in challenging weight oppression.

  • Participants will become aware of the prevalence of weight/size bias in the dominant culture and its affect on health care, including mental health care.
  • Participants will learn about alternative paradigms in which to view larger bodies, such as Health At Every Size, Size Diversity, and Body Positivity.
  • Participants will be challenged to look at their own bias related to weight and body size and will be introduced to exercises that can help them to overcome these biases.
