Responding to the Parkland Shooting: A Unified Service Delivery Approach by Counselors

Using a framework of psychological first aid (PFA) and trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy (TF-CBT), the presenters will outline lessons learned from their deployment working within the Douglas zone in the weeks following the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting. Administrative needs of the school district will be explored in relation to individual, family, and classroom counseling needs. Postvention considerations for counselors, including vicarious trauma prevention, will also be discussed.

This presentation will:  

  • Examine principles of Psychological First Aid and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) as recommended treatment models for individuals with direct event impact post mass-school shooting.
  • Review practical considerations for counselors deployed to a mass shooting, including ethical and cultural considerations.
  • Discuss critical postvention practices to mitigate vicarious trauma reactions.
