Coming Out and Religious? Counseling Gay Men and Women From an Intersectional Approach

Mar 31, 2019 7:30am ‐ Mar 31, 2019 8:30am

Description

Gay men and women often experience internalized and/or externalized religious rejection due to their sexual orientation. Specifically, the coming-out process can often result in existential crises and personal challenges. This interactive session proposes a developmental framework for understanding and treating client distress related to the intersection of religious and sexual identity development. Cass’s stage model of coming out and Genia’s model of religious development serve as the framework’s foundation.

  • Attendees will understand the coming out process through a developmental lens
  • Attendees will be able to identify the process of religious and spiritual identity development
  • Attendees will learn how to counsel religious clients who are coming out using an intersectional approach of religious /spiritual development and sexual identity development
