Requeering the Trans Binary: Gender-Nonconforming Counseling Experiences

Mar 31, 2019 12:15pm ‐ Mar 31, 2019 1:15pm

Description

What is gender nonconforming (GNC)? Genderqueer? How do we effectively assist those who transgress the “gender binary”? This queer theory–informed session will review previous research on these topics and its lack of nonbinary identities, provide excerpts of GNC individuals’ experiences of their counseling experiences, and discuss the themes that existed in both positive and negative GNC counseling experiences. This session will conclude with a discussion to explore participant questions around these topics.

  • Participants of this sessions will be able to define and differentiate Gender Nonconforming (GNC) from other identity categories / labels.
  • Participants will be exposed to client narrative excerpts that apply to these topics for both negative and positive experiences in counseling and what were the factors that supported them.
  • Participants will learn (and have a space to discuss/ask questions) in order to provide more trans-positive and informed services to Gender Nonconforming (GNC) clients.

Speaker(s):

  • Michael H. Stephens, MA, Senior Outpatient Counseling / Supervisor, Family Behavioral Resources
