From Being Sexually Victimized to Emotionally Revictimized

Description

Revictimization involves exposing survivors of sexual victimization to a secondary victimization, which can be in the form of repetitive sexual abuse, neglect, or emotional abuse. Thus, uninformed counseling practices may potentially contribute to emotional revictimization. This poster session will provide information about revictimization and strategies to deliver competent counseling practices to survivors of sexual victimization to avoid revictimization from occurring in the counseling setting.

  • To learn about re-victimization. Counselors will gain awareness in regard to the phenomenon of revictimization and will enhance their practices as they acknowledge the existence of this phenomenon, become familiar with some of the aspects surrounding the topic, and incorporate the new knowledge into the enhancement of competent and informed practices.
  • To understand the impact of re-victimization on the survivor’s healing process. Professionals in the counseling field will comprehend the negative effects of revictimization and how it jeopardizes the survivor’s recovery process and the therapeutic relationship.
  • To become familiar with some of the ways to avoid re-victimization in counseling practices. Counselors will enhance their competencies to provide treatment free of revictimization as they familiarize themselves with some of the components that contribute to the delivery of informed and caring counseling practices when working with survivors of sexual victimization.
