This LI will delineate the escalating opioid crisis in the U.S. from a multidimensional perspective, and focus on the roles and responsibilities of counseling professionals in responding both clinically and administratively. Issues and topics to be explored will include epidemiology of substance use, addiction counseling as a subspecialty, pharmacotherapy, the theory-evidence-practice cycle, recovery management, and the link between quality and supervision.
Participants will identify and define the role of professional counselors and allied disciplines in providing clinical services and leadership in the context of the U.S. opioid addiction epidemic
Attendees will review the current data and information relevant to substance use, with a particular focus upon opioid use and co-occurring disorders (OUD and COD)
Participants will discuss the science and principles of addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery
