The diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorders has changed in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Todd Lewis, Ph.D., summarizes the basic tenets of bipolar disorder as they are discussed in the new edition. First, Dr. Lewis discusses criteria and description of all disorders, including diagnostic features, associated features, and differential diagnostic issues; then, he explains definitions of specifiers that provide greater description of the current or most recent mood episode. Dr. Lewis is an associate professor of counseling and counselor education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
