The Poetics of Counseling: Therapeutic Writing for Clients and Counselors

Description

This interactive clinical session will examine various therapeutic writing techniques and procedures and how they may be used with client populations across the lifespan and in various settings. It will provide participants with at least half a dozen techniques they can use with clients. Attendees will hear about different methods of therapeutic writing, see demonstrations of writing techniques applicable in counseling, and do some writing, thus learning the how of what is being presented. Late admission will not be permitted, due to live recording.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn about the evidence-based research on therapeutic writing and who it works best with and why
  • Participants will get to practice in role-play situations specific therapeutic writing techniques, such as theme writing and snapshots
  • Participants will gain insight into themselves as writers and the advantages and limitation of writing versus talking as a therapeutic technique in counseling
