151 - The Role of Transformative Leadership in Comprehensive School Counseling Programs

A school counselor leadership training will be presented through a descriptive case study conducted in a large, urban school district. Grounded in critical race theory, this training provided opportunities to engage in a critical examination of leadership in schools and the application of such practices in the development of comprehensive school counseling programs. Attendees will gain understanding of school counseling practices that foster more equitable school environments through transformative leadership.

An overview of school counselor leadership development will be presented through a descriptive, intrinsic case study conducted in a large, urban school district in which school counselors and school counselor administrators participated in a four week leadership training (n = 28). Grounded in Critical Race Theory, this leadership training provided opportunities for participants to engage in a critically reflective examination of leadership in schools, and the application of such practices in the development of comprehensive school counseling programs. Attendees will participate in a facilitated discussion about the leadership training and the collective reflections of the study participants. Attendees will gain understanding of the complexity of school counseling leadership and ways in which school counselors can foster more equitable and inclusive school environments for diverse student populations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will develop foundational knowledge of how Critical Race Theory can be applied to school counselor leadership practices to meet the needs of diverse student populations.
  • Attendees will learn strategies for transforming leadership theory into practice based on the leadership training conducted in this study.
  • Attendees will gain understanding of the complexity of school counseling leadership and ways in which school counselors can foster more equitable and inclusive school environments.
