Advocacy is a crucial component of counseling; and therefore, it is essential that all counseling professionals learn the value of advocacy and how to engage in advocacy activities. This session will focus on exploring counseling students’ perspectives related to their experience participating in Day on the Hill at the State Capitol and examining the effect of the experience on promoting advocacy skills. The presenters will discuss the process of planning and be engaging in a political advocacy experience.
The counseling profession has emphasized the development of social justice and advocacy competencies, emphasizing the importance of infusing this within the training of counseling students and measuring the effectiveness of the learning experiences. Thus, this presentation focuses on discussing the process of infusing a political advocacy experience within the counselor training process, as well as within the work of all counseling professionals.
