Description: There are several play therapy skills that are applicable to a wide range of different approaches to play therapy. I have chosen to cover metacommunication, therapeutic metaphors, mutual storytelling, and role-playing in this chapter because they can be used across a number of different theoretical orientations and they lend themselves to relatively simple and concrete description. For each of these play therapy skills, I describe the technique, explain the purpose for using that particular technique, provide several examples of how the technique can be used, and set up practice exercises so that the reader can experiment with the application of the skill.
