Gerard Lawson, ACA President Elect, has over 20 years experience working with at-risk youth and training counselors to work in school settings. He has worked in Virginia as a juvenile probation counselor and intake officer, and in schools with young people who are at risk for placement out of the home. Since joining the faculty at Virginia Tech, Dr. Lawson has focused on training school counselors to help students achieve to the best of their ability, while holding them accountable for the choices that they make. Gerard has conducted workshops and published scholarly articles on the preparation and support of counselors working with at risk youth. As a researcher Gerard has worked with a number of school districts to help assess school climate and safety issues, and worked directly with school staff and administration to address areas of concern. He is the PI on an NIJ grant to explore the School to Prison Pipeline (NIJ- 2015-CK-BX-0007) and co-PI on a SAMHSA grant in support of the addictions treatment.
