Matthew J. Paylo PhD

Matthew J. Paylo, Ph.D./LPCC-S (OH), is an associate professor and the program director of the counseling program at Youngstown State University.  Matthew has over 12 years of clinical experience in various settings including community mental health centers, prisons, hospitals, residential treatment facilities, and college counseling centers.  In particular, he served as mental health director for a maximum-security female correctional center in Virginia.  Matthew has authored and co-authored numerous publications and presentations in the field of counseling, advocacy, evidence-based approaches, creativity, and counselor education.  He recently co-authored two textbooks: Treating Those with Mental Disorders: A Comprehensive Approach to Case Conceptualization and Treatment and Counseling Children and Adolescents.  Matthew was the recipient of the 2014 YSU’s Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award; the 2015 Ohio Counseling Association’s Research and Writing Award; 2018 YSU’s Distinguished Faculty Services Award; and has been appointed by the governor of Ohio as a member of the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board.
