Heather L. Smith PhD

Assistant Professor of the Practice, Vanderbilt University

Dr. Heather L. Smith holds licensure in the state of Tennessee as a Dietitian and Nutritionist as well as a Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider designation and National Certified Counselor. Combining her training backgrounds, Dr. Smith focuses on the human temperament trait of sensory processing sensitivity; effective interprofessional clinical practice; and group counseling. Her clinical work has included leading groups at the Vanderbilt University Psychological and Counseling Center, including mindful eating groups, women’s groups, groups for those identifying as nonheterosexual; consulting with the eating disorders treatment team; and chairing the Peabody Office of Professional and Graduate Education Mental Health Task Force to provide recommendations for improved mental health support for professional students at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Smith currently serves on the Nutrition and Behavioral Health Working Group appointed by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition to identify the highest quality information available on the impact of nutrition on mental health.
