Debra Hyatt-Burkhart PhD is an Associate Professor and the Director of Program Practices in the counselor education program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Nationally Certified Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor whose practice of more than 25 years has primarily focused on marriage and family counseling, and work with multiply traumatized adolescents. Dr. Hyatt-Burkhart’s research has focused on positive approaches and responses to working with trauma related issues. She has examined salutogenic approaches to the treatment of trauma, supervision, and teaching. Dr. Hyatt-Burkhart’s most recent work has focused on the “expectancy effect” or how second order expectations may be used as a mechanism to mediate the effects of vicarious trauma and promote vicarious posttraumatic growth.
